Schools and the eSmart framework

The eSmart program helps schools effectively manage cybersafety and deal with cyberbullying and bullying. The national roll out of eSmart to all Australian schools is under way, following the successful pilot in 2010.

What are the Cyber Risks?

Young people are at risk of unsafe, abusive, or aggressive behaviour online. For further information and detail please visit the eSmart website.

Wattle Park Primary School eSmart Vision

At Wattle Park Primary School we are currently developing the framework to establish an eSmart culture throughout the school community.

Our aim is to be a school where the smart, safe and responsible use of information and communications technology is a cultural norm. Students, teachers and the wider school community are equipped to embrace the best these technologies can offer, while being savvy about the pitfalls.

Being eSmart is integrated across a number of school policies and documents which include:

* Student Engagement and Wellbeing Policy

* ICT Acceptable Use Agreement

* ICT Code of Conduct

* Student Code of Conduct Booklets

* School Start Up Program

* Whole School Curriculum Plan

One staff member from each teaching area in the school takes on the role each year of ICT leader and is part of the eSmart committee. These teachers are responsible for:

* Managing ICT resources

* Monitoring safe and responsible use of ICT devices

* Planning cybersafety and eSmart curriculum

* Supporting teachers in their eSmart journey

Through the implementation of a BullyStoppers grant in 2013, students developed their own "Bullying Education" videos which include topics of unfair power, being a bystander and how to "Stand up to Bullying". These are used each year as the basis for discussion with students in years 3-6 in our "Start Up Program". Students in the junior years investigate age appropriate cybersafety topics through online resources such as Hector's World on the CyberSmart website http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/ .

Since we have been on our eSmart journey, students from Wattle Park Primary School have also regularly engaged with "Project Rocket". This community organisation is leading the way in addressing cyberbullying with young people in Australia. For more information on their programs visit http://www.projectrockit.com.au/
