Principal's Report 2nd September 2022

Hello Everyone,

This week we started our new IT person, Prathima Yadlapalli, who is replacing our former IT person, Emily Martin who has taken up a position closer to home. We welcome Prathima and look forward to her being a familiar face around our school.

Canteen

Our Canteen has evolved over time and this is single handedly due to our canteen convenor, Ms Charlotte Stilve. As an objective testament to her unsurpassed skills in the areas of health, hygiene and general cutting edge canteening, our tuck shop was assessed by Whitehorse City Council’s Environmental Health Unit, which resulted in Charlotte’s canteen being awarded a 5 star rating. Well done Charlotte!

Chickens

A message from one of parents, Sheree Spiteri, who has undertaken the ongoing  task of organising our chicken roster:

Hi WPPS families,

Thank you all for generously giving your time over the year to help out with the chickens and the visiting lambs, it is very much appreciated.

The September holidays are just around the corner, so I thought I better start asking who will be around and able to help with the chicken over the two weeks.

Please see the below dates that require helpers, and if you could let me know which days you are free to help that would be fabulous.

Our Students

Book Week

Last Friday Book Week, themed ‘Dreaming with Eyes Open’, culminated in a dress up day where students were encouraged to dress up as a character from their favourite book. If you stood very quietly late on Thursday day night, anywhere within the entirety of Victoria you would’ve heard a mid level drone - that of sewing machines running at a rapid pace, in preparation for book week parades across the State. As a picture tells a thousand words here we go (apologies, I missed 6B!)

Sporting Triumph!

Over the weekend I went to the School Sport Australia Cross Country Championships. I left on Thursday morning to go to Adelaide and then on Friday the events began. On Friday, Team Victoria walked the course and so did all the other states and territories, after that we had a team photo and there was an opening ceremony. Saturday morning was the big race, 3000 metres. I ended up coming 14th which is amazing because I was aiming for top 15, I was pretty happy with myself. The U12 team received a bronze medal which was terrific! On Monday was the 5 x 500m relay, we came first which means we are the fastest U12 group in Australia! Henry C 6B

Students of the Week

Well done to all our recipients for actively displaying our school values. Students who are not in attendance to receive their certificate will be awarded at the next week's assembly.

Our Staff

Hello Wattle Park Community,

I have been a Performing Arts Teacher for nearly 20 years. I have been fortunate to gain my first experience as a teacher at Witold Lutoslawski Secondary Music School in Poland.  I also was privileged to graduate with a major in piano performance studying under Beryl Sedivka and Ian Monroe at the Conservatorium of Music in Tasmania. I am in my third year at WPPS, having taught at various secondary schools in Melbourne.  I absolutely love teaching at Wattle Park Primary.

I always believe that if you love what you teach, then the students will love it too. Currently I am very excited about preparing our selected students for the Victorian State School Spectacular Concert, which will take place in John Cain Arena on 10th September. It is a huge opportunity for our students to be involved in such a breathtaking performance, so well done to all students for their hard work and commitment.

Thank yous

Trees

Thank  you to Julian Roberts and  Michael Hunt whom, on Wednesday this week, set to work removing various dead/dying (or just plain ugly!)  trees from around the Banksia St. entrance of our school. This required a lot of elbow grease, a whole day’s volunteer labour and the use of a chipper. The mulch produced has been deposited at the end of the main building and will be further spread when the boulders that have been removed from the front  of the main building have been organised. I have plans…

Fathers and Special Person’s Day Stall

On Thursday and Friday this week the Parent and Friends Association (PFA) ran the Fathers and Specials Persons Day stall. All money raised goes to our school and would not happen without the expert level organisers Emily Beard and Alisha Jackson. Many people signed up  to assist. Here is a picture of a few of the ladies who made this possible:  It was such a success, everything was sold out!  Thank you to the school community for supporting the event.

Notices

Gastro

We’ve had 3 cases of gastro this week so please  remember to keep your child home if they are displaying any symptoms. More information can be found HERE Gastro requires a 24 hour isolation period.

School Calendar (Go on, click on it..)

Lots of events happening this term. Events can be clicked and downloaded to your phone.

Face masks

Current advice from the Victorian Government recommends face masks are worn in indoor settings (except for close contacts, who must wear a mask indoors unless an exception applies). Students who are close contacts and want to attend should still take 5 RATs over 7 days and wear a face mask whilst indoors if they are aged 8 years or over. A letter provided by the Department of Education and Training has been sent out this week via COMPASS to explain DET’s current position.

2023 Enrolments

2023 school planning has commenced. We are having quite a few families who are asking to enrol from outside our zone due to various factors - all of which are inherently a very positive reflection on WPPS!  So, if you have a child/children due to commence school in 2023 please complete a school enrolment and forward to the school office along with a copy of their Birth Certificate & Vaccination Certificate ASAP. A  2023 School Enrolment form is available HERE on the WPPS website or the school office.

And one more thing!

We are padlocking shut the gate to Warrigal Road after 9.15am every morning. It opens again around 3pm. We are doing this because we have a student who has a penchant for running out of the class and out of the school grounds. There are processes in place to ameliorate this issue but the safety issues are abundantly evident. Thanks for your understanding on this one.

Have a great weekend.

We operate a first aid room at Wattle Park Primary school. In order to keep our First Aid Room clean and tidy, we require parent volunteers to assist us each Friday. We'd love 40 families to help - so you only have to help once a year!
For only around 15 minutes we appreciate you checking the area, changing the sheets, and returned washed sheets the following Monday.

How to assist

  • Click on the link below, choose the date you can assist, and sign up.
  • You will not require an account or to keep a password.
  • If you would prefer not to use your email address, please email the school and your details can be entered manually to include you on the roster.
