Principal's Report 10th June 2022

Hello Everyone!

I’d like to thank everyone who turned up to the massive Working Bee we had on Sunday.

Irrespective of the impending meteorological doom, we bravely soldiered on. It had already been postponed once so it was going to be Sunday, or not for months!

To those who came with everything from chainsaws to whipper snippers, long handled chainsaws, mattocks and utes - Thank you!  Of all the items listed HERE to be achieved, virtually all of them were completed. The only issue is that l probably ought to have ordered two, rather than one skip! Thank you to all these people:

Emily, Heidi and Anna B
Anthony and Ned H
James McGinnes
Micheal, Sally, Lexi and Hayley W-H
Mark, Danielle, Betty and Alex B
Lisa, Macka and Dotty M
Felicity Bellingham and Amber and Zara S
Angus McKinnon and Larissa King
Jason and Thomas A
Lucy Farmer, Andy Welch and Josh W
Wei Sheng Yong and Claire
Kang Yang
Hasiba Jalaly

Thank you also to Daniel and Max who turned up on Saturday and took care of the fencepost replacement and John Mc who is gradually removing the remaining wood from the site of the old chookpen.

Later next term we will have a ‘Mulching Day’ where we put about 15m3 of mulch along with the front garden of the school building where the trees were removed. (Theoretically a lot easier than the massive volume of dangerous rubbish we removed on Sunday)  So keep your shovels, spades, rakes and wheelbarrows within reach..!

Teaching and Learning

So we continue to get to know the staff we have onsite I’d like to introduce Rosy:

My name is Luzhi (Rosy) Zhang, a Masters student who studies teaching at the University of Melbourne. I am attending Wattle Park Primary School for my placement and aim to gain clinical teaching experience at Wattle Park Primary School. For this placement, I teach Year 1 students with Kathy as my mentor teacher. The environment in Wattle Primary Park is very friendly and stimulating. I like the strong bonds between teachers and students and among teachers. Students are supported with differentiated teaching and build trustful relationships with their teachers. All of the teachers are open to communicating and sharing ideas to better support students' development.

Y1 1 Como House Excursion

On Monday this week our year 1 students went on an excursion to Como House as part of their Term 2  ‘History’ unit. The program explored the past lives of Melbourne families in the 1890's with a particular focus on the story of the Armytage family who lived at Como from the nineteenth and into the twentieth century. Costumed servants introduced students to the complex social world of a family in the 19th century. Our students were made aware of how servants operated, investigated games and sports from that era and experienced a mystery scavenger hunt.

Foundation Incursion

As part of the Foundation unit ‘All About Me' this term the Fire Brigade visited FA and FB this week. This unit examines how individuals work well in the community and what services are locally available to support people. The Fire Brigade talked to our students about good fire/bad fires, the process for surviving a fire ‘crawl down low go go go!’, safe meeting places, what is an emergency, what 000 is for and how it functions. The firefighters put on full uniform and answered all sorts of questions from our students.

Gastro

We have had a few more cases of gastro than we might expect in our school community recently. Please be vigilant with hand washing etc. For more information please go HERE.

Hello Chickens!

Our lovely feathered ladies require your help!

We are looking for someone to coordinate the roster for feeding the chickens over the upcoming holidays and the weekends thereafter. We already have 7 families who are ready to help. We just need someone to coordinate the roster. Aisha Grey has been a delight in this role and will continue to do this until the beginning of the holidays. Ms Easterbrook already has a spreadsheet ready to go. Please contact Ms. Easterbrook on amy.easterbrook@education.vic.gov.au if  you can assist.

Pathway from Somers Street

Please be careful when you are taking this path. There are a few concrete slabs that have moved. We’ve highlighted these with yellow hazard paint but as the fallen leaves cover gaps we've had a few people discover this a little too late.

COVID 19

Students and staff who are household contacts of a COVID case are not required to quarantine. They may return to school as long as they undertake rapid antigen tests 5 times during their 7-day period. They are required to notify the school that they are household contact. Students aged 8 years and above who are household contacts are required to wear face masks when indoors at school unless they have a valid exemption.

COVID positive results must be reported to school by phone or written notification and remain in 7-day isolation.

More information about the management of COVID 19 at WPPS can be found HERE.

Early Arrivals

Just a reminder to all families that our school grounds are not supervised before 8.45 am. We ask that you please utilise our Before and After School Care service through TeamKids if required.

Mobile phones and devices of communication capability

For the purpose of this statewide policy, located on our website  HERE, a ‘mobile phone’ is a device with access to a cellular (telecommunication) system, with or without a physical connection to a network. Main points:

  • Students who choose to bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and securely stored during school hours.
  • Mobile phones owned by students are brought to schools at the owner’s risk.
  • Students must switch off all notifications during the school day.
  • Call the office if you need to change a plan with your child

COMPASS PAY - 2022 Parent Voluntary Contribution Reminder

Wattle Park Primary School provides all students with free instruction to fulfill the standard Victorian Curriculum. All contributions are voluntary. However, the ongoing support of our school families ensures that our school can offer the best possible education and support for our students.

Wattle Park Primary's School Council makes every effort to keep the cost of items and activities to a minimum for all parents by purchasing in bulk, all student learning requisites, keeping items exempt from GST.

Wattle Park Primary School offers a wide range of subjects and special curriculum experiences for our students across all year levels and provides all necessary student subscriptions and supplies.

Thank you to those who have paid their voluntary contributions so far.

Building & Library Funds are Tax Deductible and can be included in this current Financial Year if payment is received before 30/6/2022.

For families who haven’t paid, we really encourage you to do so if possible as the school has purchased all student requisites for 2022 in good faith.

Be on the lookout for a Compass alert.

Details on how to use this can be found HERE as a list of instructions or HERE as an instructional video.

Events

Please check the calendar on our school’s website to keep up to date with what’s happening across the school.

Have a great LONG weekend everyone!
