Principal's Report 13th May 2022

Hello Everyone!

Teaching and Learning - around the school this week

Teaching - Our Staff

Ms. Olivia Knight is a 4th Year undergraduate teaching student from Deakin University who is currently studying a Bachelor Education Primary specialising in Mathematics. Ms. Knight is currently doing one of 3  practical components of her degree in 4B with Ms. Easterbrook.

“Hi! I’m Olivia and I’m in my final year of a Bachelor of Education degree at Deakin University, specialising in Mathematics.

My time at Wattle Park Primary School has greatly increased my excitement to begin my teaching career and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Amy Easterbrook and the wonderful students of 4B. I will be teaching in 4B for 9 weeks throughout the year, building on my teaching practice, gaining confidence, and hopefully working with as many students as I can! It has been great to be back in the classroom and see all the amazing things that the students have achieved since I was here in term 1. I am looking forward to the rest of my time at WPPS and the influential experiences that it will bring.”

Learning - Our Students

From our Foundation teachers Ms Churchward and Ms. Heeps:

In Foundation we draw on our community services to help educate the students regarding safety in our community. On Thursday we were lucky enough to have Greg and Tanya from the local police force visit our classroom so the students could learn about how the police help us. The students had a great time learning about the (very heavy!) police uniform, calling 000 and all the different jobs a police officer has. A particular highlight was getting to hold the handcuffs and trying on the 20kg vest!

Not only do we learn about community safety but this police visit also provides marvellous inspiration for the students to engage in the curriculum including descriptive writing, vocabulary building through role play and endless creative opportunities.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN online began this week. Our schedule was as follows:

Tue 10.5

     NAPLAN - Writing

Wed 11.5

     NAPLAN - Reading

Thur 12.5

     NAPLAN - Conventions of Language

Fri 13.5

     NAPLAN - Numeracy

NAPLAN continues this coming week for any student who was unable to be scheduled in the above timeslots.

All schools in Victoria are doing NAPLAN online this year. WPPS was an early adopter of this technology and has many staff experienced with its delivery. NAPLAN is a national literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit in May each year. It is the only national assessment all Australian students complete. It is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. It doesn’t replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, but it can provide teachers with additional information about students’ progress. For more information please go HERE and/or visit nap.edu.au

COMPASS PAY

As part of always looking to improve our communication and payment processes at WPPS, we have added the EVENTS CALENDAR on the front page or our website outlining school terms, holidays, any early finish times, curriculum days, incursions and excursions etc. These events can be clicked on and added to your smartphone. We have also added the COMPASS PAY option as a way to pay, approve and update contacts on the day of the excursion/incursion on your phone for excursions. Preliminary reports back from parents who’ve used this facility have all been positive. Thank you to our cutting edge Year 2 teachers Ms. Kelly and Ms. Bisognano for giving it a go! Go HERE for more information about this process. Or give the office a call.
