Principal's Report - 5th March 2021

Dear Parent and Carers,

Each year we have a yearly schedule that outlines all of the events planned for each term.

Last year of course, many of those events just did not happen. So it is so exciting to endorse the upcoming Year 1 excursion to Rickett’s Point, the Year 2 excursion to the Melbourne Aquarium as well as a Year 5 & 6 Sports Gala Day. The joy of travelling safely on a bus with your friends to a special location is actually quite a treat!

Late in 2020, the Victorian Government announced funding of approximately $250 million to fund a tutoring program in 2021, ‘The Tutoring Learning Initiative.’ The tutoring program has been designed specifically to support students whose learning was significantly disrupted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. At Wattle Park we are fortunate to have Dr Karl Jenkinson, Mr Barrie Dege and Ms Monika Sztendur who will be working with a number of students throughout the whole of the year to address concerns identified by our teachers. Karl will be assisting Year 1 to 4 students, Barrie Year 5 & 6 students and Monika Year 1 and Year 2 students. Sessions have commenced for all students involved.

Congratulations to Mr Aditya Upadhye and Mrs Joanne Cooke who are the successful appointments for a two year period to our School Council beginning this year. I would very much like to acknowledge the work of the two retiring councillors; Mr Mark Boer and Ms Kellie Knight. Mark has of course, many years to still contribute to council having his youngest child commence school just this year. However Kellie’s children have both now moved on to secondary education. Kellie was an integral part of the school community over ten years, involved in so many facets of the school; an organiser of the school fete, Open Days, hosting international students, providing meals for families in need. Kellie is one of those people who is considered a ‘giver’, never wanting anything in return but always there to help out and lend a hand.

The final meeting for the outgoing School Council including the Annual General meeting for 2021 is on Tuesday 23rd March. We then welcome our new representatives to council. It’s a busy night!

Please be aware that next week the Foundation students are not required at school for both Monday (Labour Day holiday) and Tuesday. Ms Tan and Mrs Heeps still have student assessments to complete due to the recent lockdown. However all Foundation students are expected at school on Wednesday 10th March. From then on its full time at school for all students.

Next Friday is also our Welcome to School Barbecue for Foundation families commencing at 4:00p.m. It is always such an enjoyable night with almost all families in attendance with the Foundation students taking over the school grounds! Fingers crossed for pleasant weather.

I must say I am certainly looking forward to the long weekend for a change of pace. Enjoy the time with your family and the ability to meet with friends and to travel beyond the city. We have all worked extremely hard to enjoy the small pleasures that previously we took for granted.

Warm Regards

Gayle

Education Perfect (EP) Championships 2021

As part of the Chinese Program, Wattle Park students in Years 3-6 inclusive will be participating in the EP Languages Championships as in previous years. Over the next 2 weeks students will be obtaining their usernames and passwords in preparation for this event.

We have a formidable reputation at these Championships to uphold and are looking forward to competing against schools worldwide.

The Championships run for a week starting on Tuesday 16th of March at 4:00 pm and concluding on Tuesday 23rd March at 4:00pm. Although students will compete in the championships during their weekly LOTE time, most of our points are generally earned during the wonderful dedication Wattle Park students show towards these Championships whilst at home. Every correct answer earns points for our school as a whole as well as for each student’s individual achievement awards.

On the final day of the Championships students are invited to stay after school and help us earn those last minute points as we countdown to 4pm. During this time there will be some treats and lucky prizes for those students wishing to participate and help our school work towards earning points for medals. This after school celebration will be held in our school library in the administration building.

Hopefully we can maintain our reputation as being an outstanding EP championship school!

Remember your hat every day!

It’s that time of year, when all students are required to have on a hat for outside play.  Children will be required to play in the shade if no hat is worn, and being a Sun Smart School it's important to have sun protection from now until May.
