Thank you to a former parent of ours Macka, the father of a former student, Dorothy, who turned up with his ute and removed that old tyre that was cluttering up the place near the concrete driveway. You didn’t have to and you did. Thank you.

A reminder about after-school supervision

With our wonderful new playground now open, it has been fantastic to see so many children enjoying it after school. However, with the increased use of the playground, I‘m reminding families that Wattle Park Primary School grounds are not supervised after 3.45pm. 

From this time, students must be actively supervised by a responsible adult. Any student who remains on the school grounds after 3.45pm without appropriate adult supervision will be directed to the school office and their parent/carer will be contacted to arrange collection. This is an important safety requirement and ensures that we know where our students are and that they are appropriately supervised at all times.

I would also like to remind families that Team Kids hires the lower playground area from the school as part of their after-school care arrangements. This means that children cannot remain at school after 3.45pm by simply playing on the playground until their parents/carers are ready to collect them.  If you require your child to remain at school after this time, Team Kids is the appropriate after-school care service. 

We greatly appreciate everyone's cooperation in helping us keep our students safe and appropriately supervised at the end of the school day.

Our annual Parent / Carer Opinion Survey opened online for two weeks from Monday 17 August to Friday 18 September 2026. The survey is optional, takes approximately 20 minutes to complete, and provides valuable feedback that helps us identify areas for improvement and inform school planning. Last year, your feedback helped shape a range of changes, including our new playground and improvements to the canteen. All families are encouraged to participate, with login details and a unique PIN to be sent via Compass on Monday 17 August.

2026.09.09 Yr 6 John Monash Science School  - Session 1 of 4

On Wednesday, 4 selected students (Cyrus, Sherry, Billy and Viv) went to John Monash Science School as part of the ‘SPIKE Prime-ARY program’. This is a great chance for us to learn more about STEM and Robotics.

In the session we started to learn how to use lego kits to build and code our own robot. We learned about several motors and what they do. We also learned about sensors and how to use them to control our robot. We had a couple of very helpful JMSS students acting as mentors, to guide us. In the first session, we explored the coding website and learned how to use the basic structures. 

It was a positive learning experience, it was fun to build, code and create our own robots with the Lego!

Thank you to Rohan for driving us to and from the program.

‘Hats on in September’ … and till the end of the year
With our emergence from the Winter gloom into the glorious Springtime sunshine comes the need to be aware of the damage rays can do. As per our Sunsmart Policy WPPS states the following:

From 1 September to 30 April, all students must wear a sun protective hat that shades the face, neck and ears for all outdoor activities. 

“Hats on in September, off in May”

Students who are not wearing appropriate protective clothing or a hat may be asked to play in the shade or in a suitable area protected from the sun.

How to win….

It’s simple

 - Continue to bring your nude food lunches

 - Pick up rubbish around the classroom and school

 - Turn off lights and powerpoints that don’t need to be on

 - Turn off leaking taps

 - Dispose of rubbish appropriately.

Each week, a Scarecrow teacher or leader will visit one classroom (at random). They will select one student for the ECO MVP, and their photo will be taken for Assembly. The student will receive an amazing Banana Trophy and Plantable Pencil.

This week's interview is with our long term and much respected Yr 1/2 teacher- Ms Mel Downes. 

 

First year at Wattle Park	Too long ago to remember. Perhaps 1993 or 1994.
Current role	Year 1 / 2 A
Favourite subject when I was at school:	Maths, P.E., Art and Reading.
Best memory from primary school:	Travelling around the world for a day in Year 5/6. We had to have our luggage packed, have our passports ready, go through airport security and board our school chair plane. We had cabin service and everything and then, when we arrived at our various destinations, we learnt all about each country's landmarks, food and culture. It was such a fabulous way to discover the world around us.
Favourite book:	Oh this is a hard one to answer and I couldn’t possibly name just one or two. Some honourable mentions include ‘Room on the Broom’, ‘The Book Thief’, ‘Where The Crawdads Sing’ and of course I have to include the Harry Potter series!! I enjoy reading all types of books from picture story books through to novels and biographies.
Favourite book growing up:	Again, there are too many to mention, but one I have always loved is ‘The Lorax’. This may show my age a little, but I was also a big fan of “The Wishing Chair’ series and ‘The Magic Far Away Tree’ series.
Favourite movie:	I can’t, I just can’t!
Best dish I can cook:	I have been told that my chicken and sage in prosciutto and lemon and white wine sauce is pretty good, and my kids loved it growing up.
Which Zooper Dooper flavour I'm buying from the Year 6 stall:	Definitely orange!
Hidden talent:	I used to be a pretty good equestrian. I also have quite a wicked first serve, forehand and backhand slice.
Most controversial opinion:	Pineapple on pizza should be outlawed (and so should anchovies)!
Number one item on my bucket list:	Well I have managed to cross off a few over the years, so I guess my next one might be a white Christmas in Europe, or a summer travelling around the Greek Isles.
If I wasn't a teacher I'd be...	A vet.
What I would tell my 10-year-old self:	Live your best life, don’t worry about things you can’t control and don’t sweat the small stuff. Always look for the silver lining.
