Principal's Report 8th May 2026

Hello Everyone,

A huge thank you to Sjaan Keen, who single-handedly managed not only the Mother’s Day Stall for WPPS, but also our inaugural Mother’s Day Breakfast attended by approximately 80 people on Thursday morning.

This was the first time we have held such an event and all of the mums I spoke with thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to share a coffee and a chat together.

In a world where technology can both facilitate connection and encourage isolation or retreat, events such as these provide a wonderful opportunity for members of our community to get to know one another, strengthen relationships and simply catch up on the vagaries of everyday life.

Thank you again to Sjaan for the enormous amount of time, organisation and care that went into making both events such a success.

Speaking of being social…

Community Safety Orders

At WPPS we are proud of the strong partnerships we share with families and our wider community. Every day, staff, students and parents work together respectfully to create a safe, supportive and positive environment where children can thrive.

The Victorian Department of Education has clear policies in place to protect the safety and wellbeing of staff, students and school communities through the School Community Safety Order Scheme. These powers may be used when harmful, threatening or abusive behaviour places the safety, wellbeing or educational opportunities of others at risk.

Importantly although we are a public school we are on a private site. Public access is not a given. We are not a public park.

Orders can place restrictions on an adult’s behaviour, communication or access to school grounds.

As Principal, I have a legal and moral responsibility to ensure that our school remains a safe workplace for staff and a safe learning environment for students. This includes taking appropriate action when behaviour does not meet the standards expected within our community.

We ask all members of our community to continue working in partnership with us by:
• communicating respectfully with all staff and complying with any direction given
• modelling calm and respectful behaviour at all times
• supporting a culture of kindness, cooperation and safety.

We value the overwhelming support and respect shown by the vast majority of our families each day and thank you for the positive way you contribute to our school community.

Further information regarding the Department’s School Community Safety Orders policy can be found at Victorian Department of Education – School Community Safety Orders Policy.

Our Students

2026  Year 4 Term 2 Dance Program

Our Year 4 students are excited to be participating in the My Best Self Program this term, delivered by DanceSport Confidence - A series of lessons WPPS was awarded as part of a Department of Education competition we entered.

Held each Friday throughout Term 2, the engaging 10-week program provides students with the opportunity to work alongside a professional dance instructor while developing a range of important wellbeing skills. Through learning partner dances, students are building confidence, teamwork, resilience and respect in a fun and supportive environment.

The program supports students’ physical, social and emotional development, while also encouraging positive relationships and active participation. Students have already shown great enthusiasm and are thoroughly enjoying the experience!

We look forward to seeing their continued growth and participation throughout the term.

Our Staff

Continuing our series on getting to know our staff at Wattle Park Primary School, we re-introduce  Ms Woodhouse, who teaches year 3B.

Since joining the Wattle Park community in 2022, a highlight of my teaching week has always been participating in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden sessions. We’re so lucky to start one day in the garden, planting and harvesting herbs and veggies and following this up with cooking in the kitchen. I’ve learned so much from our garden teachers and have put this knowledge to good use planting my own veggie garden at home.

Before joining Wattle Park, I worked as a CRT across several Eastern suburb primary schools. Teaching was a career change for me, prior to this I was a Quality Assurance Officer in the food industry. My days as QA officer were filled with a range of diverse tasks from taste testing batches of hot cross buns and party pies, to calculating nutrition information and performing allergen traces. I feel like this was excellent preparation for teaching at WPPS, where our days in Year 3 are just as varied. We might be focusing on Maths one minute and julienne-ing carrots the next!
