Principal's Report 1st May 2026

Hello Everyone,

Thank you to all members of our school community who attended our ANZAC Day Dawn Service last Saturday. Approximately 50 people came together to honour and reflect, demonstrating the deep respect our community holds for this important occasion.

It was also a pleasure to welcome former Principal Nick Farley, after whom the Farley Forum is named. As we gathered at dawn, we paid tribute to all who have served—past and present. The setting of a new day at WPPS provided a unique and respectful backdrop for this dignified occasion.

We are grateful to everyone who took the time to be part of this reflective and meaningful service.

On Saturday, the 25th of April at 5:45 am, our school community came together at WPPS to remember those who served our country in WW1 and other wars. On ANZAC Day, we learned about the many Australians and New Zealanders who fought in the war, which is why it's called ANZAC Day (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps). This service made us remember how very lucky we are that so many Australian and New Zealand soldiers were willing to sacrifice their lives to make this country a safer, better place. The school captains laid the wreath at the school memorial at the same moment the official war veterans laid theirs at the shrine. Overall, we were given time to respect and remember how noble the ANZACs were, and how many of them took action to ensure Australia remains the safe and peaceful country it is today.

Our Students

2026.04.30 Yr 56 Financial Literacy Incursion

Kristina from Talk Money ran the Financial Literacy incursion. The program gave us information about how everybody spends their money and the different ways to spend money. Not just that, but we were also given some real life examples so we know when it’s the right thing to do at the right time. It also taught us how different experiences and different cultural backgrounds affect how people spend their money.

Mihika and Felix learned about how every person uses their money differently and can sometimes have completely different ideas about what to do with it.

Sadie learned about the word H.E.A.R.D which is used to assist you when trying to spend money smartly and different sayings about how earning money is a thing you need to do.

Dorsa learned about money stories and how cultural ways of spending money can affect your perspective on money.

Our Staff

Continuing our series on getting to know our staff at Wattle Park Primary School, we re-introduce  Ms K, who will be teaching 12C Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for this term taking over from Ms Saaksjarvi while she is on leave.

Ms K as I am famously known, because my last name is a challenge (Kanagaratnam)

I am currently the Year 1/2C teacher for this Term at Wattle Park Primary while Anna Saaksjarvi is on personal leave. I have now spent 3 years in Victoria after having lived in Perth, WA for the past 17 years. I was born in Malaysia and have a 25 year old daughter who is about to complete her masters in teaching and a 24 year old son who has just started the masters of physiotherapy. Both of them are residing in Perth. I met my husband Errol in 2019 by reversing my car into his car at a shopping mall in Garden City, Perth. We were married in 2021, Who needs a dating app when this is a new opportunity to meet someone .. Ha! Ha! Errol has four children who reside in Perth too and we are now the “Brady bunch”. Do you now understand why we ran away from Perth and moved to Melbourne… Ha!

I have been teaching in Malaysia and now Australia for the past 21 years. I have had most of my teaching experience in Montessori Schools spending many years in different cycles. Children’s House (3-6 years), Lower Primary (6-9 years) and Upper Primary (9-12 years). I have also been a specialist teacher in these schools as a LOTE teacher (Indonesian) and in Art as well.

I decided not to return to full time teaching when I moved to Melbourne in 2023, because I wanted to have a feel of working in different schools and to have the freedom to travel at any time. Since residing in Melbourne I have now travelled to 71 cities in the world over 3 years. I have over the past 2 years done casual relief teaching at Wattle Park and have found it to be such a beautiful school with friendly, supportive staff and have found the school was filled with respectful and responsible students. Hence, when the opportunity to take on a role as 1/2C teacher I jumped at it. Most of the students already know me as the P.E teacher from last year.
