2026.03.24 Teachers’ Strike

As you will probably already be aware, the Australian Education Union (AEU) has scheduled industrial action in the form of a teacher strike on Tuesday 24 March.

As communicated earlier, this advance notice has been shared to provide families with as much time as possible to make alternative arrangements and to ensure that students are kept home on this day, as there will be no classes operating at Wattle Park Primary School.

This industrial action is part of a broader effort to advocate for fair and equitable pay for teachers in Victoria, in line with their colleagues in other states. Our staff are deeply committed to their profession and to the students they support each day, and this action reflects the importance of recognising and valuing their work.

I understand that this may cause inconvenience, and I sincerely thank you for your understanding, support, and cooperation in making the necessary arrangements.

Should there be any further updates, I will communicate these with you as soon as possible.

Our Students

2026.03.12 Year 3 & 4 Sports Gala Day

Our Year 3 and 4 students enjoyed a fantastic day of sport, teamwork and fun at last Friday’s Gala Day. The day provided a wonderful opportunity for students to represent the school, try new activities and demonstrate great sportsmanship.

Students participated in one of four sports: Newcombe, Tennis, Cricket, or Ultimate Frisbee. Across the different venues, students showed excellent enthusiasm, determination and teamwork as they competed against other schools and supported their teammates.

Throughout the day, it was wonderful to see students encouraging one another, celebrating successes and demonstrating resilience when challenges arose. Many students had the chance to develop new skills, while others proudly represented the school in sports they are passionate about.

A big thank you to the staff who organised the day and supported the teams, as well as to the parents and families who came along to cheer on the students. Your support helped make the day even more special.

Most importantly, it was fantastic to see so many smiling faces and students enjoying being active outdoors. It was a memorable day for our Year 3 and 4 students and a great celebration of participation and teamwork.

Students of the Week!
As a result of our recent School Review, as well as the work we are doing with our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Program, our school values changed last year from six:

Respect, Responsibility, Care, Encourage, Value and Challenge to the ‘Three R’s’;

Respect • Responsibility • Resilience

Congratulations to all of our students who have displayed these values this week

Our Staff

Continuing our series on getting to know our staff at Wattle Park Primary School, we re-introduce  Ms Anna Saaksjarvi, who teaches 12C Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Hi again everyone ?

As I have said before, I really do feel very lucky to be part of such a welcoming, supportive, fun and engaged community. This community includes the children, staff, parents and careers. We are so lucky to be such an open, friendly and inclusive school. Something for which I think many of us are certainly very proud of.

I started teaching at Wattle Park Primary in 2012 in the Year 5/6 area. Since then, I had some time off whilst having my 3 children, who also attend our amazing school. After spending some time in Year 3 and Year 2 after returning from maternity leave, I am now very much enjoying teaching Year 1/2C for a second year.

As one of the literacy leaders, along with Sam Teng, I am incredibly proud of the dedication and commitment of our staff to learn more about and implement the Science of Learning in our school. We are working very hard on taking the knowledge of world wide researchers and leaders across a variety of areas, including neuroscience, to adapt our curriculum to become more explicit and in line with up to date, evidence based practices. We’re certainly still a work in progress, but we are very proud of where we have come from and where we are going. All of our hard work and dedication is all about providing the best for all of our students!

We want everyone to come to school feeling safe and happy and that no matter where they are on their learning journey, they are improving and working towards achieving their individual goals. We all have our own unique strengths and wonderful different ways of experiencing the world. Understanding that and celebrating that is important.

As I have said before, I really appreciate how our students look out for and support each other. How truly lucky we are! It is certainly a reflection of our wonderful broader community.

As we approach the end of Term 1, I want to thank everyone for a wonderful first term and wish you all the best for an enjoyable break!
