Yr 34 Farmacy - An exploration of hydroponics
Over the last two weeks, our Year 3/4 students were lucky enough to take part in the Farmacy program. This is an exciting, hands-on journey into the world of hydroponics. Students were introduced to the idea of growing plants without soil and were fascinated to learn how water, light and nutrients work together to help plants thrive.

The highlight of the session was preparing their very own seedlings for our hydroponic system. Students jumped straight into the challenge, showing plenty of curiosity and enthusiasm as they carefully set up their plants.

In the second week of the program students learned there are ideal conditions for each stage of a plant’s life. They learned how to monitor the hydroponic system to make sure the plants have exactly what they need by testing the pH levels of the water and the electrical conductivity of the plants. We were amazed to learn that if plants have more nutrients, they will have a higher electrical conductivity because they have a higher level of ions!

We are lucky enough to be able to keep the hydroponic system in our Stephanie Alexander kitchen. It will be so exciting to study our herbs and vegetables as they grow, they are already so big after only 2 weeks!! This has been an enriching experience for our students, enhancing their gardening knowledge and inspiring the sustainability experts of tomorrow!

Maths Olympiad
During Term 2 and 3 high achieving students in Mathematics in Year 4, 5 and 6, compete in an Australian wide Maths competition called the Maths Olympiad. WPPS selected 26 students to compete this year. We met once a week to investigate various problem solving concepts like this:

Spencer wrote down three consecutive counting numbers.
The first is a multiple of 5, the second is a multiple of 3, and the third is a multiple of 4.
What is the least possible sum of Spencer's three numbers?

Results came in last week. WPPS:

  • Is in the top 10% of all teams who competed in Australia.
  • The 2nd highest school in Victoria (above Scotch College and Haileybury)
  • Has 5 students who achieved a perfect score. Only 208 students achieved this out of 37,019 who competed. This puts 5 of our students in the top 0.56% of Australia!

This is an expectational result and testament to the hard work of our students, teachers and parents.

Well done:

Students of the Week!
As a result of our recent School Review, as well as the work we are doing with our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Program, our school values have changed from six:

Respect, Responsibility, Care, Encourage, Value and Challenge to the ‘Three R’s’;

Respect • Responsibility • Resilience

Congratulations to all of our students who have displayed these values this week.

This week, we investigated Respect- and how it looks in Digital Spaces

Our Staff
Continuing our series on getting to know our staff at Wattle Park Primary School, we re-introduce  Ms  Samanth Teng, who teaches 1/2C on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Wow, the year is coming to an end so quickly. With my class soon moving into the next year level, I’m really taking the time to savour these last few weeks with such a lovely bunch of students. I am incredibly proud of all they have achieved this year, and I know I am going to miss them!

The students are so excited about the fete, and I want to thank all the parents involved for creating such special memories for our school community. So many hours, weeks, and months have gone into this event, along with so much passion. Thank you for being such a wonderful and supportive community for all our families.

Earlier in the year, I shared a little about myself, so here is a small update on what I’ve been up to. I was lucky to have my parents visit from Canada, and they helped out with some family chores while they were here. My own children have had many events and activities recently, so life has been very busy—especially with birthday parties and end-of-year gatherings ramping up!

Project Playground
Having a visual focus for our fundraising efforts is an important way to galvanise support for community funded projects.

You will notice we have a sign up on the corner of Banksia and Warrigal Road. The purpose of this sign is to:

  • Let everyone know what we are raising money for (New playground)
  • How to help (Donations can be made via the QR code)
  • How much we have and how much more we need to go (About 80G)

This platform is live and the QR code can be used to donate (so feel free to donate!)  but given the proximity of the fete we will leave an official ‘Launch’ to a later date.
