Betty and Etta’s Reflection on Rotary Speech Competition Finals
On Tuesday night, the 12th of August, the big day had finally come. At Roberts McCubbin Primary School, the presenting room was packed with more than 100 people, including judges from Mont Albert and Surrey Hills Rotary. Some people we knew there included both sets of parents, Betty’s brother Alex and Etta’s Gran. Also, our teacher, Ms Carlson and our friend Isla from school - all there to cheer us on. It made us feel so much better.
It had all led up to this. We had both gone through two rounds of Rotary Speeches at school to get to this moment. All the speeches were great, but some stood out more than others. There were fifteen participants, and Betty did her speech second. When I first sat down in my seat, I was feeling very nervous. “Second! Why am I going second!” But as they called my name, I had to build up the courage because I knew I had practised my speech many times and deserved this. When I got up there, all the worries flushed away, and I proudly read out my speech with happiness. When I was done, I felt so wonderful that I had successfully presented my speech. It was great!
Etta went 11th with her speech. I went through listening to several speeches, and the nerves were ecstatic. I sat there counting down the number of speeches until mine, but before I knew it, the girl in front of me was speaking. There were no words to describe how I was feeling. But then, they called me up to the stage. I stood there for a few minutes, wondering when I had to start. They adjusted the microphone, and then it was all up to me. I felt all eyes on me. But when I started to speak, it felt like I could fly, and when it was over, I was happy and proud of myself.
Unfortunately, neither of us placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd, but we both had a blast and would love to come back. Thank you Roberts McCubbin and thank you Rotary!

Our Staff
Sabrina Lin - Mandarin Teacher
你好吗?(Nǐ hǎo ma? – How are you?) I am Lin laoshi, the LOTE-Chinese teacher at Wattle Park Primary School.
This is my third year at WPPS, and I feel so grateful to know each student and to share with them the joy of learning a new language and exploring a different culture.
Term 3 is always a fun term in the LOTE classroom because FOOD is our focus! We are not only learning how to say different food items and cuisines in Chinese, but also celebrating through hands-on activities. In the coming month, the Year 3 and 4 students will be making mooncakes for the Mid-Autumn Festival, while the Year 5 and 6 students will be designing menus for our Best Menu Competition. Students and staff across the whole school will then vote for the WPPS Best Menu of 2025. We are all very excited!
Ask your child which new vocabulary or activity we explored together and see if they can share something they have learned.
Most importantly, my focus as the LOTE teacher is to create a space filled with respect, joy, positivity, and curiosity — a place where every student feels confident to try, make mistakes, and grow while developing their language skills and understanding of other cultures.
p.s. the photo is my sister, her dog Boba and me
Have a lovely day!
