Our Students

LOTE (Language other than English) Incursion

On Tuesday, Year 4, 5 and 6 students participated in an engaging Chinese Fan Dance incursion. The session began with a fascinating performance by the dance teacher, showcasing three different types of traditional Chinese fans: a long flower fan, a Kung Fu fan, and a large flower fan.

Students then had the opportunity to explore the unique features of the Kung Fu fan, including learning how to create loud snapping sounds – a key element of its performance style. They also learned a choreographed Kung Fu fan dance incorporating martial arts-inspired movements such as 马步 (mǎ bù, horse stance) and 弓箭步 (gōngjiàn bù, bow stance), along with dynamic kicks and jumps.

It was a great experience that helped students explore Chinese culture through movement, rhythm, and dance.

Our Staff

Our series on our staff proved so popular last year, I have requests for it to return as our parents have different teachers this year.  Reintroducing Ms Monica Woodhouse who teaches 3B.

Since joining the Wattle Park community in 2022, a highlight of my teaching week has always been participating in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden sessions. We’re so lucky to start one day in the garden, planting and harvesting herbs and veggies and following this up with cooking in the kitchen. I’ve learned so much from our garden teachers and have put this knowledge to good use planting my own veggie garden at home.

Before joining Wattle Park, I worked as a CRT across several Eastern suburb primary schools. Teaching was a career change for me, so prior to this I was a Quality Assurance Officer in the food industry. My days as QA officer were filled with a range of diverse tasks from taste testing batches of hot cross buns and party pies, to calculating nutrition information and performing allergen traces. I feel like this was excellent preparation for teaching at WPPS, where our days in Year 3 are just as varied. We might be focusing on Maths one minute and julienne-ing carrots the next!

Deakin Uni & Wattle Park Primary School Counselling Opportunity
Wattle Park Primary School continues its valued partnership with Deakin University’s Counselling Unit to offer student counsellors the opportunity to work with students from Wattle Park Primary School.

The purpose of this engagement is to provide short-term counselling to support students in achieving physical, social, emotional, academic, and psychological well being.

Prior to undertaking placement, students have completed core subjects required to equip them with sufficient counselling skills and the ability to apply these to a range of clients as required.

Counselling support is only effective when those taking part are willing participants.

If you wish for your child/ren to participate in the Deakin University Counselling Opportunity, please email either steven.donohue@education.vic.gov.au or richard.abell@education.vic.gov.au.

WPPS will select which students participate in the program based upon the parameters of the counselling provided and the needs of the specific child. As you will understand, medical privacy is of the utmost importance, and as such the basis upon which students are chosen will only be discussed with relevant parties.
