Principal's Report 23rd August 2024

Hello Everyone,

Tuesday night this week I attended the annual Rotary Speech Contest which took place at St. Erasmus in Surrey Hills.

Rotary co-ordinates the hosting of the annual Primary Schools Speech Contest, showcasing the speaking skills of senior primary students who have won the preliminary competitions held at their own schools in our local area. The quality of the speakers and their speeches leaves us confident in the future of our country. Schools involved were: Our Lady of Perpetual Succour PS, Chatham PS, Our Holy Redeemer PS, Box Hill North PS, Surrey Hill PS, Mont Albert PS and Roberts McCubbin PS and of course, WPPS   Each school selects its two finalists from its preliminary competition to showcase their speech at this event.

Congratulations to two of our Year 6 students,  Lila C and Oscar P who made us proud with their very well written and articulated works. A credit to their parents and teachers.

2024 Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey
PLEASE TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - closes today!

Our school is conducting the annual Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey offered by the Department of Education and is seeking your feedback. The survey is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour, and student engagement. The survey is optional, but we encourage and appreciate your participation.

Our school will use the survey results to assist in identifying areas for improvement and professional development needs in the school, to target school planning and improvement strategies.

The survey is live from:

Monday 29 July to Friday 30 August 2024

The survey will take 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones.

The survey is available in English and 10 other languages including Arabic, Greek, Hakha Chin, Hindi, Japanese, Punjabi, Simplified Chinese, Somali, Turkish, and Vietnamese. Resources are also available in additional languages to assist parents / caregivers / guardians who speak a language other than English at home. Please reach out to your child’s teacher, or the school directly for survey guides in your language.

A link and PIN was sent to all parents earlier this week. If you did not receive yours, please contact the school office on 9808 2165.

Thank you in anticipation for your much appreciated contribution.

Our Students

Yr 3 - Perky Panda Incursion
To coincide with Book Week, we had an author visit from Maria La Selva who has written the Perky Panda series. Both her books inspire children to show kindness and compassion. Another key aspect of the series is that Perky Panda cleverly demonstrates how practising mindfulness techniques can positively assist in regulating emotions.

Avery: I learned 'amore' means love. It was really fun holding up the posters and reading the book together. I liked watching the animations and the songs.

Asher: It was really fun because we learned about how Perky Panda makes friends. It also taught us that everyone wants to be loved and how we can care for each other.

Yr 2 Book Week
The Year Twos had a fantastic time celebrating Book Week with a delightful book tasting event! Students spent an exciting afternoon sampling a variety of books from different genres, getting a real "taste" for new stories and information. They were fully engaged, using strategies to help them pick out books and reflect on their growth as readers. It was a fun and inspiring way to spend our Thursday afternoon, and now everyone has a new wish list of must-read books!

Students of the week
Well done to all our recipients for actively displaying our school values. Students who are not in attendance to receive their certificate will be awarded at next week's assembly.

Our Staff

Continuing our series on getting to know our staff at Wattle Park Primary School we introduce our  Assistant Principal who also teaches Year 6B on Mondays, Mr Richard Abell.

“Hello Wattle Park Primary Community!

I’ve been fortunate enough to be teaching for over a decade across a number of different settings including overseas. However, no setting has compared to Wattle Park Primary and I have had the great pleasure and privilege of teaching here for over eight years now. Over these years I’ve had the opportunity to work across a range of year levels and currently working in the senior school as one of the Year Six teachers and Assistant Principal.

I love this school for many reasons from the collaborative staff who continuously work tirelessly to support one another and our students and families. To the amazing students that seek to grow and evolve on a daily basis and have a hunger to learn. To our community that is constantly engaged and supportive of all parts of our school.

I look forward to being involved in our great school evolving and improving moving into the future."
