Hello Everyone,
I have had some questions from students lately about the use of sticks in the playground.
This is the rule:
You can use any size stick you like as long as you do not use it to intentionally cause harm.
Building together not only helps students experience basic physics and engineering but socially it encourages everyone to discuss, coordinate and create something for mutual benefit.
A skill the world needs.
The only other understanding is that the sticks around the playground operate like lego in the classroom. No-one owns the lego so you must be fair and share.
We have discussed this at Assembly the last two weeks so feel free to reinforce this at home.
Our Students

Year 5 & 6 John Monash Science Program
On the 1st of May, four Year 5/6 students went to John Monash Science School (JMSS) to participate in the Little Scientists program (Lena Z, Zoe W, Jackson L & Khang T).
We were selected after completing an expression of interest, and we learned about chemistry and pH levels. The experiment we did was using a purple cabbage indicator and Universal Indicator to see whether a substance was acidic, basic, or neutral due to its colour. For the purple cabbage indicator, the more red it was, the more acidic the substance was. Purple is neutral, and the basic colours were blue, green, and yellow.
For the universal indicator, the colour green would be neutral and for the colours more closer to red, would be acidic, and if it was closer to purple it would be basic. We were helped by a Year 11 JMSS student there and we also learnt about lab safety. Next time, we are going to learn about biology and microorganisms. We loved this program and we are looking forward to the next session.

ICAS
We are delighted to inform you that we will be participating in the world-renowned ICAS competition this year across Years 4 – 6.
What is ICAS?
ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) is an online academic competition that is designed to assess students’ higher order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling and Digital Technologies.
Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition and development. Every student who participates will receive a printed certificate and an online results report. Top performers will be eligible for medals.
We encourage you to consider entering your child (Year 4-6 only) into ICAS this year.
How to participate in ICAS
If you wish for your child to participate in ICAS this year, please:
Please note that the ICAS tests shown for selection are at the school’s discretion.
After payment is made via the Parent Payment System, you will receive an order confirmation email. Please keep this for your records.
ICAS Results and Certificates
We will notify you of the date(s) that we run ICAS at the school and when your child’s ICAS results are ready. You will have until Monday 29th July to make an order, and your child will be sitting the test/s in August. Once we have received your child’s ICAS certificate, we will send it home with your child. The back of the certificate shows ICAS results and the login details, ‘TAP ID and Pin’, that you and your child need to enter on the Results Portal.
Our Staff
Continuing getting to know our staff at WPPS, we introduce our PE teacher and Specialist Leader, Mr Nic Lindsay:
Hello Wattle Park Community,
I have been at Wattle Park since halfway through 2018 and have been primarily teaching Physical and Education for the past 5 years. My love of sport and exercise has been a through line of my life, playing all sorts of sports from swimming and rugby to footy and athletics. Outside of sport I love to read (fantasy and sci-fi as my favourites).
My position at Wattle Park was actually the first teaching job that I ever got and it has been a joy to develop my practice here. I have also been working part time at other schools over the last four years.
This year has been my second year as a classroom teacher in YEar 5. A position l am really enjoying.
This has been a little bit about me so if you see me around the school feel free to say hi.
Nicholas Lindsay
