Principal's Report 19th November 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

I’m quite sure that on Monday morning you would have noticed the difference to our school grounds.

An enthusiastic band of parents and students arrived with tools in hand to rid the school of weeds, overgrown grass, prune trees and tidy up garden beds. The working bee was indeed productive, but it highlighted the fact we need more! A special thank you to the Waller-Hunt, Van Delden, Yong, Welch, Hansen, Povey, Agars, Curlewis, Parker-Ding, Vagias, Mack and Mackinnon families for all of their efforts. The weather in the morning was fine which ensured much was achieved and as we finished, down came the rain! Impeccable timing.

Thank you to the School Council Building and Grounds subcommittee convenors; Michael Hunt and Ben Van Delden for organising.

Today our air purifiers with HEPA filters for classrooms should be arriving. These are not provided by the Department of Education but rather the Wattle Park Primary School Finance Committee have approved the purchase from school funds.

It is not a guarantee that the school will not have a case of COVID-19 amongst our students, but it is another form of protection along with face masks. Having air purifiers in classrooms will filter out COVID-19 particles and simultaneously remove allergens, dust mites, skin flakes, and other particles that can trigger allergies and asthma in many students. So, the air purifiers will be beneficial for a number of reasons and for a number of years. Thank you to the school community in paying our allocated school fees over the years as this has provided the necessary funds to be able to purchase the air purifiers for the school.

As of last night, a number of restrictions have been lifted by the Victorian State Government with regards to limits on gatherings at households and venues. Please be aware that schools at this point in time have not received the next School Operations Guidelines which are particular to schools. So, nothing has changed with regards to the guidelines we need to follow as yet. Updated guidelines can arrive at any time- late Friday nights, weekends, midday through the week but please be assured that as soon as possible Assistant Principal, Mr Steve Donohue and I update the school website and send out important notifications through Konnective.  I know of some state primary schools in surrounding areas utilise the Wattle Park Primary school website messages and update their own website accordingly.

This week we welcomed our Foundation students for 2022 to their first transition day on Wednesday afternoon. It was a delight to be able to host them onsite and meet their parents. The children settled quickly and enjoyed either an art session with Mr Davey or a classroom lesson with Mrs Robyn Heeps. It can be an emotional time for parents to see their children commence formal education in a school setting and it is for teachers too because as we welcome our newest students, we are preparing to say farewell to our Year 6 students.

Arrangements for our Year 6 Graduation are well underway, and the school is so thankful that the students are able to share a spectacular night as a rite of passage with their friends to their next stage of education. Our Year 6 students are a remarkable group of students. A very special bunch of students who we feel we have not had for long enough. Their time and experiences at primary school will certainly be remembered.

Four weeks left of school, yes, I am counting! Hoping for some sunny days. Sunshine certainly elevates everyone’s spirits, and it means the students can go out to play!

Enjoy the weekend.

Warm Regards

Gayle
